Venezia coach Paolo Zanetti admits his team had a ‘bit of a shock’ start to Serie A after two defeats, conceding five goals and scoring zero.

The 2-0 loss at Napoli was bad considering they were against 10 men for over an hour, but there was little fight in today’s 3-0 defeat at Udinese either.

“Looking at the results, it has been a bit of a shock, yes,” said Zanetti in his press conference.

“We’re playing all our games away from home and there were a lot of new lads making their debuts today. Those are not alibis, just facts.

“We need to cut down on errors by eliminating naïve mistakes. We had chances to score today, but weren’t clinical enough, and then conceded with two counter-attacks after losing possession. That’s the difference between a decent performance and a bad result.

“I hope the lads realise where we are and quickly. I saw improved confidence and the desire to take the game to the opposition in their own stadium. We need time to work and there’s not much of that in Serie A, so we have to make the most of the break for international duty.

“I realise it’s difficult right now to see the potential in this team, but I see it. A few hammerings might help us wake up and recognise we’re in Serie A now.”

  1. Why a shock start, serie a is one off the leading football league competitions of the world. It’s fiercely competitive with a fine line drawn between the best, followed by the mediocre. The basic form the serie b but they can aspire to compete in serie a with real investment & quality managerial.
