Javier Zanetti says he 'wouldn't sign for third', while promising: 'Inter still have huge margins of growth'.

The club's vice-president is conscious that his team just lost the head of Serie A to Fiorentina after their 1-1 draw with Sampdoria, but he showed no signs of worry.

“The team is growing,” he told Radio Rai. “We needed a reaction after the defeat to Fiorentina and we knew things were going to be tough against the Blucerchiati at the Ferraris.

“I saw the group react. The championship is very well-balanced, there are many teams close to each other.

“But I think it's too early to discuss the Scudetto.

“I wouldn't sign for third, but I'll sign to return to being the protagonists and fighting till the end.

“Yesterday [Ivan] Perisic had a great game, not only because he scored but because of his defensive work. He can cover a great deal of roles.

“In the second half he managed to do great things both attacking and defending.

“Inter still have huge margins of growth and [Coach Roberto] Mancini is doing a great job.

“The defensive phase is working, there is a lot of quality in the midfield with the likes of Felipe Melo, and we have many alternatives going forward.

“Some of the players still have to adapt. Our championship is a very complicated one.

“Mancini really wants to do well and we back him completely.”

Zanetti was then asked about their Scudetto rivals Juventus, who will be their next rivals in Serie A's Week 8.

“Against Juventus it's going to be a very important match. We have two weeks to prepare it, though it's a shame that some of the players will have to go off on international duty.

“[Stevan] Jovetic? We have to understand whether he is well or not. I don't think that Montenegro would want to risk the player.

“We have a lot of focus on our youth sector. Many of the kids are training with the first team.”
