Javier Zanetti admits it’s “difficult” for Inter not to be in the Champions League, and targets a return.

The Nerazzurri vice-President performed the draw for the Last 16 of the competition today, with the final to be held at San Siro.

“I hope to see Inter in the Champions League as a protagonist again next year,” Zanetti told Sky after the draw.

“Being without the Champions League is difficult for us, but we have grounds to try for it until the end of the season.

“We’re used to playing in this competition, for the history and tradition of the club.”

The Beneamata have stretched their lead at the top of Serie A to four points, but champions Juventus have put together a six-game winning streak, with the latest victory coming against Fiorentina last night.

“We knew that Juve could win, but we still have to fight with Napoli, Roma and Fiorentina too, it’s a balanced League.

“Our main rival? I’d say Napoli and Juventus, who have the squads to get to the end. I’m not surprised to see Juventus rising, they had to find their moment after a bad start.

“But there are still a lot of games to go.”

Zanetti handed Juve and Roma tough Champions League ties against Bayern Munich and Real Madrid respectively, but thinks the Bianconeri can progress.

“Juventus are growing game by game recently,” Zanetti explained.

“They can play on equal terms with Bayern. In the Europa League there are three difficult ties for the Italians, but they can compete on a par with anyone.”
