Venezia coach Paolo Zanetti was pleased with the comeback and Luis Nani’s impactful debut, but cannot understand their terrible start against Empoli.

The visitors dominated the first half at the Stadio Penzo, taking the lead through Szymon Zurkowski and creating many more scoring opportunities.

It was so bad that Zanetti hauled off two players for a double tactical change at the 35th minute.

“It was a game of two halves,” Zanetti told DAZN.

Serie A | Venezia 1-1 Empoli: Nani makes immediate impact

“I was really disappointed by the first half, because it was impossible to get it that wrong in our approach. I cannot understand why we were so completely lacking in aggression and determination.

“We proved after the break that we can do these things when we want to, it’s just we seem haunted by something and have to shake those fears off as soon as possible.

“Perhaps some of these players are not accustomed to dealing with a type of match. We always have to be aggressive and I had no warning signs before kick-off that we’d start this way. I have to understand what happened.”

Nani only arrived yesterday as a free agent and after one training session he made an immediate impact, providing an assist one minute and 55 seconds after coming on.

“I hadn’t wanted to play Nani, as he hasn’t trained for a month, but he’s a champion and showed his quality with just a couple of moves. We signed him to increase the quality level and this showed why.”
