Paolo Zanetti insists ‘even a draw felt harsh on Venezia, let alone a defeat’ after the last-gasp Spezia winner at the Stadio Penzo.
Pietro Ceccaroni’s header had been able to cancel out the Simone Bastoni strike, but deep into stoppages Medhi Bourabia hit a screamer into the roof of the net.
“We certainly showed our lack of experience, because you cannot lose a challenge in midfield like that and spark a counter-attack,” the coach told DAZN.

“I also told the lads that they cannot create this many chances and then lose 2-1. It’s disappointing, as even a draw felt like it was harsh on us, let alone a defeat.
“Spezia had two sensational goals and at this level, you have to take your chances. So many times today, we didn’t even manage to get the shot away, we got into good positions and didn’t make the next step towards a goal.”
Gianluca Busio impressed in midfield and the United States international even provided the assist for Ceccaroni with his free kick.
“Busio has quality, quantity, is settling in and his future is bright, but let’s not forget he was born in 2002. He needs time to develop.”
Zanetti explained that his expanding Venezia squad is by no means the finished article, so everyone must fight to earn their place in the line-up.
“We are a team with everything to prove, so whoever impressed the most in training will earn their right to play at the weekend. This is Serie A, it’s a moment you can tell your children about, so they must make the absolute most of every minute they get on the pitch.
“We’re well aware this will be a tough season, but the performance today was good and we were more than a match for a team that has more experience than us.”
