Paolo Zanetti has no qualms about admitting Empoli took a safety-first approach to their 0-0 draw with Milan at San Siro. ‘We have no shame in defending well against a stronger opponent.’

Tuscans were the underdogs going into this evening’s match, especially as the Rossoneri beat Serie A leaders Napoli 4-0 away from home last week and are gearing up for the Champions League quarter-final.

Despite having only 30 per cent possession and getting two shots away in total, Empoli are content with the point.

“We defended very well, taking the right approach against a team that is devastating when running into space,” Zanetti told Sky Sport Italia.

“We opted for this type of approach and have no shame in defending well against a stronger opponent. This is a vital point.

“When you come to San Siro, you must evaluate the strength of the rivals and we had no shame in taking a defensive approach with organisation and focus.”

Empoli seem to really enjoy coming to the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, as they already beat Inter 1-0 here earlier this season with a Tommaso Baldanzi strike.
