Zanetti backs Ranocchia

Inter vice-President Javier Zanetti has backed Andrea Ranocchia after his howler in last night’s Coppa Italia tie.

The centre-back was guilty of a horrendous mistake in the defeat to Napoli, failing to react to a throw-in, before falling over and allowing Gonzalo Higuain to score a 93rd minute winner.

“Andrea is calm, he’s a great professional and mistakes can happen,” Zanetti told reporters as he spoke about a charity match.

“Andrea is calm, he’s a great professional and mistakes can happen,” Zanetti told reporters as he spoke about a charity match.

“What counts is having the strength to overcome these moments. Andrea must feel comfortable because he has great values and is a great professional.

“These things can happen in a game, and it won’t be the last time. It happened to me several times in my long career.

“The important thing is having the strength to recover, I’m sorry about yesterday, because we played a great game but came away with a bad result.”

The former right-back also gave his backing to Beneamata Coach Roberto Mancini, despite a poor start to his second spell at Inter.

“Mancini is a great Coach, and we’re all confident in everything he does.

“I think Mancio has great ability, these bad spells can happen, what makes a great team is overcoming them.

“If the lads succeed they’ll become stronger. We’re have regrets about the results, the lads are committed and working in a professional way but the win just isn’t coming.

“Sunday will be a difficult game against Palermo, but we just need a win to really make a breakthrough.”
