Javier Zanetti assures Inter fans “we are just as sad as you” after the Champions League exit to Olympique Marseille.

Diego Milito thought he had done enough to force extra time, but a Brandao goal in stoppages meant the Nerazzurri crashed out on away goals.

“Unfortunately, tonight’s victory does not give us qualification,” Zanetti told Inter Channel after the 2-1 final result.

“It’s hugely, hugely disappointing, because it was a hard-fought match and we really wanted to go through. We were faced with a good Marseille side and created many scoring opportunities.

“After going 1-0 up, the qualification was open and we gave it all we could to find a second goal, then the equaliser arrived. In all honesty, I don’t think we deserved to go out.”

In both Marseille and Milan, Inter conceded decisive goals in stoppages.

“In both games it all happened at the end,” continued the captain. “Above all tonight we paid such a heavy price, but now we’ve got to get back up and first of all applaud our fans, who supported us throughout.

“Now the fans are sad, but I can assure we are just as sad as you, because all of us wanted to continue the Champions League experience.

“It has been a bit of a complicated season, difficult since the start, but we will try to finish it in the best way possible.

“Now we have to focus on Serie A and try to do as best we can to finish the campaign in the top section of the table. It won’t be easy, as this was a tough blow, but we will try to climb the positions and achieve third place. There are many teams ahead of us, but it’s our duty to try.”
