Zamp: Iachini a son to me

Palermo President Maurizio Zamparini has offered his unconditional backing to Beppe Iachini, claiming the incumbent Coach is ‘like a son’ to him.

The Rosanero supremo, known for his ruthless treatment of tacticians, has been speculated as ready to make another change at the helm, following the side’s winless start to the season.

However, the club owner insists Iachini is not to blame for the Sicilian’s slump and says he will back the former Sampdoria and Brescia boss for at least the next few years.

“[The rumours are] all nonsense. Iachini is like a son to me and will stay for another 4-5 years,” Zamparini told Corriere Romagna.

“I’m convinced that we will win our next five games. We’ve been particularly unlucky.

“Against Sampdoria, the victory was ours until we conceded a goal at the end. We deserved the three points against Inter, but only one arrived.

“And then in defence, we have been under great emergency, but on Sunday we will have everyone available. I just hope that we will have more luck [against Cesena].

“I would love to have the luck that Cesena had against Udinese. Come on, they were a goal down until the 91st minute and losing the match, before they were given that penalty.”

Looking ahead to the weekend’s visit of Cesena, the 73-year-old highlighted the presence of his former Palermo sporting director Rino Foschi, who is now with the Seahorses.

“Rest assured, Foschi will remain at Cesena for a long time because that’s his home. Him being far away from Palermo is, for me, is a concern,” Zamparini added.

“He always manages to build strong teams that create us a lot of problems, like last year.”
