“When I arrived I promised the fans that we would return to Serie A within three years,” he enthused on Thursday.

“We are proud to have succeeded and given joy to this city. Now I hope and I promise that within four years we can reach the Champions League.”

Currently, only the top three sides in Italy qualify for the Champions League, with the third-place team having to go through a final pre-competition qualifying round before making the tournament proper.
