Alberto Zaccheroni concedes he “thought Japan would perform a lot better” in the World Cup.

The Italian Coach helped them become the first team to qualify for the tournament, but they crashed out with just one point from three group games.

“It has not been a positive outcome – we're going home and we haven't qualified,” Zac told the media after a 4-1 defeat to Colombia.

“I thought we played better tonight than we did in the first two matches, but tonight we faced the toughest opponents in the group.

“We thought we'd perform a lot better here in Brazil. I think I selected the best squad we have. They were the correct ones to bring here, but we fell short.”

Zaccheroni is widely expected to be sacked as Coach of Japan, despite winning the Asian Cup in 2011.
