Mattia Zaccagni admits Lazio leave Munich with regrets after their Champions League exit to Bayern. ‘We should’ve made more of the chances we created in the first half.’
The Biancocelesti had gone into the Allianz Arena with a 1-0 first leg advantage thanks to the Ciro Immobile penalty.
However, when Immobile missed a diving header at the back post and moments later Harry Kane put Bayern Munich in front, it felt like the belief drained out of them.
“We are disappointed, because we should’ve made more of the chances we created in the first half. Unfortunately, they then scored, we lost confidence and lost this opportunity too,” Zaccagni told Mediaset.
“Football is made up of incidents. We had the chances to go in front when it was 0-0 and they didn’t go our way.”
Thomas Muller redirected a Matthijs de Ligt volley from six yards on a corner for 2-0 and Kane added another after the break on the rebound from Ivan Provedel’s save on Sane.
There didn’t seem to be a way back and Lazio failed to reach the Champions League quarter-final, which they have not experienced since 2000, but the regret is that they failed to get a shot on target in Munich.
Lazio must now focus all their energy on clawing their way back up the Serie A table to qualify for at least the Europa League, while another option is to win the Coppa Italia after setting up a two-legged semi-final against Juventus in April.
“We must try to remain united, look towards the next game on Monday and bring the win home.”
The next Serie A match will be against Udinese on Monday March 11.
In the other fixture this evening, Gianluigi Donnarumma’s Paris Saint-Germain won 2-1 away to Real Sociedad, sending them into the quarter-finals 4-1 on aggregate with a brace from Kylian Mbappé.
