Saudi Arabia signed off their World Cup campaign with a win, thanks to Salem Al-Dawsari’s last-gasp goal against Egypt.

Both sides had lost their opening two fixtures, so were simply playing for pride in their final Group A match.

Egyptian goalkeeper Essam El Hadary became the oldest player ever to feature at the World Cup at the age of 45, while his side were looking to score their first goal from open play since the 1934 tournament.

Egyptian goalkeeper Essam El Hadary became the oldest player ever to feature at the World Cup at the age of 45, while his side were looking to score their first goal from open play since the 1934 tournament.

Their talisman Mohamed Salah duly achieved that on 22 minutes, cleverly lifting the ball over Yasser Al-Mosailem after latching on to a long ball by Abdallah El Said.

Fahad Al-Muwallad had the chance to equalise from the spot, but his kick was spectacularly saved by El Hadary.

The Saudis received another penalty deep into first-half stoppage time though, and Salman Al-Faraj made no mistake.

It appeared both sides would leave the World Cup with a single point, but Al Dawsari popped up in the 95th minute to secure Saudi Arabia’s first World Cup win since 1994.
