Atalanta midfielder Teun Koopmeiners pulled off an incredibly intelligent free-kick to allow Wout Weghorst to find the Netherlands’ last second equaliser against Argentina.

The 24-year-old stood over the ball alongside hotshot teammate Cody Gakpo and surprised everyone by playing a low-drilled pass instead of a shot, which beat the Albiceleste defence and went straight to Weghorst, who made no mistake in front of goal and found the decisive equaliser.

Although Weghorst was the goalscorer, Koopmeiners was the star of the play and the Atalanta midfielder has drawn immediate praise from across the footballing world.

His fellow Serie A competitor Denzel Dumfries also was central to the match, although for different reasons; the Inter wing back gave away a penalty after fouling Marcos Acuña in the 70th minute of the match, a moment that allowed Argentina to go 2-0 up. He’ll be grateful for Koopmeiners’ quick thinking, allowing him to forget the mistake.
