According to Sky Sport Italia, the Bundesliga side made a remarkable proposal for the Belgium international.

They were prepared to pay €30m for Mertens, but Napoli have no intention of releasing their attacking wide man.

The 28-year-old was also linked with Inter, but President Aurelio De Laurentiis threatened to sue the player’s agent if he had met another club without permission.

Mertens only joined Napoli in 2013 for €9.5m and struggled for regular playing time under Rafa Benitez.

He impressed so far this summer with Coach Maurizio Sarri and hopes to make more of an impact.

This story has another angle to it, as if Wolfsburg really did offer €30m for Mertens, it suggests he’d be a replacement for Inter target Ivan Perisic.

In fact, Mertens is seen as an alternative to first choice Perisic for the Nerazzurri on the left flank.
