Sampdoria midfielder Harry Winks, on loan from Tottenham, admits nobody from Spurs have called him over the last few months and believes the Blucerchiati can still avoid relegation.

The English midfielder missed the first part of the season due to an ankle injury but has become a regular starter under Dejan Stankovic in the second part of the campaign.

The Blucerchiati sit rock bottom of the Serie A table, level on 12 points with Cremonese and 12 below 17th-placed Spezia who are just outside the relegation zone.

“I feel in debt to Sampdoria. If I had been available from the start, I would have given my all to help the team, but I don’t want to think my presence would have been fundamental,” Winks told Gazzetta.

“This is a great team, regardless of what’s going on.

“I am sorry because the club has always supported me, on and off the pitch. It was important to solve my ankle problem. There are amazing people here, and so are the fans. There is a strong sense of beloving and I can only be grateful to the team. There have been many changes, but we’ve never lacked support. We will continue to fight, we can still make it.”

Sampdoria have a €25m option to make Winks’ move permanent in June, but the Blucerchiati are having financial troubles and relegation to Serie B would probably make it impossible for them to sign the Englishman permanently. However, Winks doesn’t want to think about what will happen in the summer.

“I am on loan until the end of the season, I am satisfied with this experience, but I don’t know what the future holds and I don’t want to think about it,” he said.

“I can only focus on the next match, but I am proud to have made this choice. Nobody from Tottenham has contacted me, not even the coach. I was and am fully focusing on Samp.”

The 27-year-old watched Spurs in their Champions League meetings with Milan and is sorry they didn’t make it to the quarter-finals.

“Yes, it’s a shame because Tottenham could have won, but Milan defended really well.”
