Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson says Wednesday’s game against Milan will be the most important game of his career and plays down controversy after an argument with Guglielmo Vicario over the weekend: ‘We’re grown men…’

The English striker was involved in a dispute with the Italian goalkeeper on Sunday during an after Tottenham’s 4-1 win over the Magpies.

He and Vicario argued on the pitch and exchanged barbs after the final whistle, both during post-match interviews and through social media. A few days later, Wilson seems to have left the matter behind.

“I got asked a few questions and didn’t intend to offend anyone or mock anybody. We’re grown men and it’s forgotten about,” the 31-year-old said at a press conference on Tuesday, as quoted by Chroniclelive.

Wilson hopes to start against Milan on Wednesday in a key Champions League meeting for the Magpies and the Rossoneri. Both sides have five points in Group F and will keep a close eye on PSG in their away game at Borussia Dortmund.

Wilson hasn’t yet found the net in the Champions League but hopes to end his European goal drought against the Rossoneri.

“It would be an amazing moment. I personally believe it hasn’t come yet because it’s waiting for a special moment,” he said.

He was also asked if the imminent European fixture is the most important game of his career.

“It’s up there. In terms of club football, definitely. You always dream about this as a kid and getting the opportunity to qualify, it would be up there, yeah,” he replied.

“I’ve been able to achieve my dream along with players who may not have once had the opportunity.

“Dortmund away was my first start so, for me, walking across the pitch and hearing the music playing – it was a special moment. There are times when I’ve had double ACL injuries, and I thought nights like this would never happen.”
