Georginio Wijnaldum could be ready to make his long-awaited return to action and claim his first start in a Roma shirt in this evening’s game against Cremonese in Serie A.

Wijnaldum has only made three appearances in Rome under Jose Mourinho since his arrival on loan from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer.

The Dutch international has been recovering from a broken tibia sustained in August following an unfortunate training ground challenge from Felix Afena-Gyan.

The incident occurred on the eve of Roma’s game against Cremonese in the first round of Serie A fixtures.

Coincidentally, Afena-Gyan joined La Cremo from Roma on a permanent deal just over a week after Wijnaldum’s injury. Both Afena-Gyan and Wijnaldum are in contention to start for their respective sides at the Stadio Giovanni Zini this evening.

Wijnaldum, who was expected to miss the majority of the 2022-23 season, has been recovering well and re-joined the group for training.

The Dutchman has registered cameo appearances from the bench in Roma’s last two Serie A games against Hellas Verona and Lecce.

Wijnaldum also emerged from the bench in the 81st minute of Roma’s most recent Europa League game against RB Salzburg on Thursday.

It is believed that he could be in line for his first start for the Giallorossi this evening.
