Georginio Wijnaldum’s former manager said the Netherlands international could lead Roma to the title.

The Paris Saint-Germain midfielder is expected to leave the French club this summer with strong reports suggesting Roma would be his most likely destination.

And Gertjan Verbeek, who briefly managed Wijnaldum at Feyenoord in the 2008-09 season, said the player would have a hugely positive impact on Roma should he make the move.

Asked by La Gazzetta dello Sport if alongside new arrival Paulo Dybala he could lead Roma to the Serie A title, Verbeek said: “It’s difficult to say but why not?

“At the end of the day, winners help teams win and he is a European champion from his time with Liverpool.

“I can see him fitting in well alongside [Lorenzo] Pellegrini and [Tammy] Abraham. Also in the Netherlands he scored a lot more, then with [Liverpool manager Jürgen[ Klopp he learned the defensive side of the game as well.

“He remains one the best No. 8s in Europe.”

Wijnaldum only joined PSG 12 months ago but reports in France suggest he is not part of new manager Christophe Gaultier’s plans.

Roma have already signed Nemanja Matić and Dybala on free transfers as well as defender Zeki Çelik and goalkeeper Mile Svilar as Mourinho looks to build on last season’s Europa Conference League victory.

  1. They still need time to get used to the system. Looking good for Roma and hopefully they can build on and dismantle as per usual.
