Netherlands player Georginio Wijnaldum

Georginio Wijnaldum had first been contacted by Inter in January, confirms his agent, but talks collapsed due to ‘financial difficulties.’

Representative Humphry Nijman spoke to Fabrizio Romano on the Here We Go podcast about the situation.

The midfielder left Liverpool as a free agent and had seemed on the verge of signing for Barcelona, but Paris Saint-Germain proposed a better salary and he changed at the last minute.

“In January, Inter Milan showed interest and also Mr Piero Ausilio made an offer for Gini, but some problems shortly after that started, Steven Zhang had some difficulties to get the money out of China, so Inter at a certain point were not able to fulfil the obligations of what they wanted to do,” said Nijman.

“Inter were the first, then the director of Juventus phoned me and showed interest, also in the same period Leonardo from Paris Saint-Germain also approached me.”

Wijnaldum had seemed destined to reunite with Dutch manager Ronald Koeman at Barcelona.

“We had some talks with Barcelona, initially it all looked very good and we were along the way, but meanwhile also Paris kept showing the interest was quite serious.

“With both offers on the table, of course then at a certain point we have to make a choice. Both clubs are fantastic options, but at the end the choice fell on Paris and we were able to conclude the deal.”
