Harry Winks is starting to grow into an important player for Sampdoria this season but the Tottenham loanee could still return to North London in the summer.
The 27-year-old English midfielder joined the Blucerchiati last summer on a loan deal with a €25m buy option attached. He had to wait to make his debut for the club, carrying an ankle injury that kept him sidelined for the first half of the season.
Winks came off the bench to make his Sampdoria debut in their 1-0 loss to Empoli on January 16, and has played the full 90 minutes of their last three league outings, starting to stand out as a reliable and quietly important player.
Despite the positive signs Winks is now showing with Sampdoria, he may still be forced to return to Tottenham at the end of the season, when his loan deal expires.
Financial issues are currently plaguing the Ligurian side, who reportedly haven’t paid wages for the final quarter of 2022 and need €11m to resolve their debts with players and staff members. Should the club fail to resolve this issue by February 16, they’ll be handed a point deduction.
On the pitch, things are no better for Sampdoria. They currently find themselves 19th in the Serie A table, picking up a pitiful 10 points from 21 league outings, putting them eight points behind 17th place Spezia. Relegation to Serie B is now looking like a serious possibility, something that makes a permanent move for Winks extremely unlikely.
