This is the final day of the 2022-23 Serie A season, but it might not be over yet, because Spezia and Hellas Verona could be heading for a relegation play-off.

The last round of the regular season is completed this evening and there are still a few things to be decided.

As things stand, fifth and sixth place go into the Europa League and seventh gets the Conference League.

However, if Juventus are excluded by UEFA due to financial irregularities, then eighth place will be worth Conference League qualification, and that means Fiorentina.

Atalanta have a superior head-to-head record with Roma, while Roma have the advantage over Juventus and the Bianconeri would be ahead of Atalanta if they finished level on points.

If Fiorentina beat West Ham United in the Conference League Final on Wednesday, they qualify automatically for the Europa League.

The other issue is relegation, where Sampdoria and Cremonese are already doomed to the drop, while Spezia and Verona are level on 31 points.

It’s therefore winner takes all today when Spezia visit Roma and Verona are at San Siro with Milan.

However, only for relegation and the Scudetto from this season, if two teams are level on points, then a play-off becomes necessary.

It would be a one-off game on neutral turf, most likely set for June 11, and if that failed to find a winner after 90 minutes, it would go straight to a penalty shoot-out.

There has not been a Serie A relegation play-off since 2005 between Bologna and Parma.
