Footage shows that Thomas Lemar handled the ball before Pierre Kalulu, so Atletico Madrid’s penalty against Milan should’ve been revoked by VAR.

It was 1-1 at the 92nd minute when the referee pointed to the spot for a Kalulu handling offence.

While there is some leeway when it comes to handball, there is one very clear rule that means VAR should’ve intervened.

The footage inarguably shows that it is Lemar’s arm that touches the football first, then it strikes Kalulu.

There is no provision for intentionality when it comes to handball for an attacking player leading up to a goal.

VAR looked at the footage and decided not to alert referee Cuneyt Cakir that he had made a mistake.

Luis Suarez converted at the 96th minute to give Atletico Madrid a 2-1 victory at San Siro.

  1. looks like kululu handled it first. looks like it came off lemar chest and then kululu handled it. right decision by the ref. even in that zoom in, it was touching kululu hand. ref went with what he saw with his naked eye. VAR couldn’t give conclusive evidence to change it. good call by the ref.

  2. It’s been proven beyond all doubt that it was Lemar’s handball. It looked odd in real time, and after ONE replay I thought it looked like Lemar’s handball. I don’t see how the ref could see enough to initially give a pen, but he seemed to want to give Atletico decisions all night, and they appealed so hard, as they always do.

So the question should really be asked: why did VAR fail to identify this? I’m sure it’ll all be brushed under the rug, but by this point we all know the truth re: UEFA.

  3. @serie a lover. Instead of saying ‘it looked like’…go and look it up. it hit Lemar’s hand first 😊

  4. Please no more hate crimes against us bald people. Were a minority and most of us are not bald idiots like tbat ref and allegri.

  5. fair call by the ref. he went with what he saw in real time. VAR couldnt overturn it. the evidence wasn’t conclusive. i dont mind the bad talk by the milan fans. i call a spade a spade. it was a fair call by the ref. u look at the vid in this article. it isn’t conclusive. ref went with what he saw with his naked eye. cant fault him for that.

  6. it clearly hit Lemar’s hand……… but AFTER Kalulu handled it. so it’s a penalty. Milan fans stop crying. You have zero points so get ready to fight for Europa League qualification with Porto because that is your level

  7. Hope these haters here who are hating on Ac milan are not Juve fans??

Because As far as champions league is concerned, milan is the best in Italy…..this season too, they will still topple Juve as last season……

So if you are Juve and you are here spewing trash then hide in shame

  8. Nothing to be shamed of losing against Liverpool and Atletico as Milan have just made it back to CL. At least they are not like Juventus who cannot get past lesser teams, and Inter who should have won that game seeing as Real lost to a village team from Moldova

  9. The difference is that wealthier clubs have more at their disposal plain and simple. They can bring on Griezmann and have a deeper bench, whilst Milan have an injured 40 year old and Giroud. Italian clubs will never win this competition until they can find more money to be at the level of the elite.

  10. it seems UEFA are influencing the results . Nothing New as they want certain teams and stages of the competition to be exciting and always nail-biting . Mr Ceferin and UEFA love it.
    GREED POWER CONTROL .
Serie a lover is a fake its clearly handball by the Atletico player. But VAR poor this is once again to control the game and influence results
UEFA and Ceferin are going down in history to be the people who started the demise of football as we know it.
Sorry guys if i gone off at a tangent.
Really staring to going off the game i love

  11. Thursday night football suits Milan more. I think they better focus on the head to head with Porto to finish third in the group. Milan and Inter are terrible in the CL. Milan with zero points and Inter with 0 goals

  12. Irregardless of whose arm it hit first both players were literally on top of each other with nothing gained by hitting an arm. It seems some people think it is a penalty every time it touches an arm but that should not be the case. If the player has no chance to avoid touching the ball because s/he is too close, the ball is hit too hard, it rebounds off someone, etc., it should not be a penalty

  13. Remember when Juventus were getting robbed all the time in UCL (happened with the same ref as well) and Milan fans were mocking Juve for complaining? How ironic, first time in ages they qualify for UCL and immediately start blaming the refs. Milan should at least get the 3rd place to give Italy some points. All this talk about Milan returning to Europe and saving Italy and these are the results…

Also, someone above mentioned Juventus. Reminder that when Juve returned to UCL after a lot of years, in 12-13, they made it to quarter-finals and only lost to eventual winners Bayern. And two years later they made it to the final. Let’s see how many years it’s gonna take Milan and Inter to get out of the group stage.

  14. It was an extremely harsh second yellow for Kessie. How many times have Italian teams had players harshly sent off when they’ve been playing Spanish teams?

  15. Lemar hit it with his hand and thereafter it hit kalulu..
We were robbed big time. Not so much the lose but the red card because we would have won 3-0 at least.

  16. Prior to the red card Milan was by far the better team first of all it should have been warning then yellow or yellow warning and then another yellow . First yellow although it was Kessie’s first offense I can seeit being justified the second yellow shouldn’t been a yellow it should have been a warning . The penalty as per the new definition it’s not a penalty the referee clearly wanted Atletico to win this match . Milan played a ache of a game

  17. PATHETIC Officiating.

This Juventino knows full well that Milan got robbed. I meam Tonali and other Milan players were the ones with their hands in the air alerting the Ref of the Lemar handball.

VAR is supposed to eliminate these clear mistakes.

Milan were superior to AM before the Red Card.

Not all is lost. I will not be at all shocked if the Rossoneri win the next 4.

  18. @seria A lover – you are obviously a inter fan lol. Get lost donkey. Every commentator and every journalist has said it was a Lemar handball. Clear as day. It was a handball on Lemar and the ref for whatever reason didn’t look at it. Shameful and disgraceful. Excellent game by Milan too bad the ref ruined it. We continue to play like that we will qualify.

  19. Kalulu as a defender lacks the experience on how to mark player, that was a costly mistake in the box and he paid for it.Milan would have sealed that game even at 1-1 knowing fully well that we are one man down for a very long time.

  20. UEFA are utter scum who are ruining the game. Can’t believe, as an Inter fan, that I’m siding with Agnelli with his war against UEFA.

The Super League, as was proposed, is a bad idea, but it generated a start of a discussion which simply must continue.

UEFA are such maniacs that they allowed the BPL to become stronger then the UCL. Unforgivable

  21. Something I feel is telling about situations of controversy like this is the reluctance to report on it. PSG v City highlights are up on the UEFA website, Porto Liverpool highlights are up.. No match report and no highlights 12 hours on.

  22. I think the tears in your eyes blurred your vision. There were more angles which clearly show that it was a good call. Better luck next time.

  23. I’m not so sure it was favouritism. I saw an experienced referee who didn’t want to feel undermined by VAR. His experience should’ve told him to use the tools at his disposal, which he did not.

  24. Well… it clearly shows the ball coming from Lemar´s belly/chest towards Pierre Kalulu´s arm. PENALTY.

  25. Nobody is disputing that the ball touched Kalulu. But to answer the comment saying the referee got it right. If the ball came off Lemar’s chest, how did it rise up to meet Kalulu’s arm? Because looking at the trajectory of the ball coming in, if it came off his chest, it wouldn’t have moved up as seen in the video evidence and you can clearly see Lemar moving his arm up.
I wonder, if that guy would be saying the same if it was his team that conceded this penalty and lost the game as a result…..
