Former Italy striker Luca Toni was emotional ahead of the Champions League clash between Borussia Dortmund and Chelsea, revealing that he felt ‘like crying’.

The Bundesliga giants picked up an important 1-0 win over the Blues in the first leg of their Champions League Round of 16 clash, thanks to a wonderful solo goal from 21-year-old Karim Adeyemi. Dortmund will be keen to repeat their performance in the second leg at Stamford Bridge on March 7.

Toni, working as a pundit for Prime Video, was present at the Westfalenstadion for the Champions League clash, revealing that he felt emotional ahead of kick-off.

“What memories…what emotions…I feel like crying…I have a World Cup in my eye!!! Ahaha the yellow wall is a sight!!!”

The reason why Toni was emotional was because the Westfalenstadion was the venue for Italy’s famous 2006 World Cup semi-final win over hosts Germany, when Fabio Grosso and Alessandro Del Piero both scored in the dying minutes of extra time to send the Azzurri to their first World Cup final since 1994.

Toni started that match and played 74 minutes before he was replaced by Alberto Gilardino, who set up Del Piero’s 120th minute strike.

  1. And like the Del Piero goal, Borussia Dortmund’s goal came post a counter after a Chelsea cross into the box….
