Sandro Tonali’s lawyers are negotiating a plea bargain for the Italy and Newcastle midfielder who is expected to get a longer ban than Nicolò Fagioli having reportedly placed bets on his former clubs Milan and Brescia.
Sky Sport Italia and other reputable sources in Italy claim Tonali’s representatives are meeting with the FIGC Prosecutor on Monday to determine the midfielder’s suspension following his involvement in a betting scandal which came to light last week.
Sky claims Tonali has admitted to gambling on Milan and Brescia games while under contract with the Rossoneri and the Rondinelle although he always bet on their former clubs to win.
This means Tonali is not suspected of match-fixing even if gambling on his former clubs will likely lead to a longer ban than Juventus midfielder Fagioli.
The 22-year-old has been suspended for seven months after agreeing on a plea bargain with FIGC Prosecutor Giuseppe Chiné.
Fagioli self-reported to FIGC after being investigated by the Turin Prosecutor in the summer and sought help to treat his gambling addiction.
Tonali is also going to meet a specialist to treat his disease but according to Sky, the FIGC Prosecutor is inclined to ban him for a longer time than Fagioli because Tonali placed bets on Milan and Brescia while under contract with the clubs.
According to Sky Sport Italia, Tonali lawyers aim to reach an agreement with the FIGC Prosecutor today.
If footballers aren’t match fixing, they shouldn’t be banned for betting. Fagioli and Ivan Toney in England should be reinstated to the game now and Zaniolo and Tonali should be exonerated if proven not to be placing match fixing bets
