Milan midfielder Sandro Tonali is being initially rested in a home Serie A clash against Salernitana.

The Italy international was surprisingly dropped from the Rossoneri’s starting XI for their San Siro meeting with Paulo Sousa’s side.

As explained by Sky Sport Italia, Tonali was expected to start today, but Stefano Pioli eventually decided to omit him from the starting line-up to let him rest.

Tonali has already played 32 games across all competitions this season, starting every match since the beginning of 2023.

The 22-year-old has played every minute of every game in the new year except for a 1-0 win over Torino on February 10, when he was replaced at minute 89 and the first leg of the Champions League Round of 16 against Tottenham four days later, when Pioli replaced him with just four minutes remaining.

Rade Krunic and Ismael Bennacer start in the middle of the park against Salernitana on Monday night.
