Supercoppa games that are drawn after 90 minutes go directly to a penalty shootout to give players more rest and avoid ruining the pitch.

A newly formatted Supercoppa kicks off on Thursday, January 18, with Serie A defending champions Napoli meeting Coppa Italia runners-up Fiorentina in the first semifinal.

Lega Serie A revealed at the end of December 2023 that there would be no extra time for games that are drawn after 90 minutes and Gazzetta dello Sport has explained why matches that end with a stalemate after 90 minutes will go directly to a penalty shootout.

The pink paper notes that all Supercoppa games will be played within three days. The first semifinal is on Thursday, the second between Inter and Lazio is on Friday, and the Final has been scheduled for Monday, January 22.

Playing just 90 minutes in each game would allow players to be more rested, so Lega Serie A decided to go straight to penalty kicks.

At the same time, all matches will be played at the same stadium, the  Al-Awwal Park in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, so the turf will probably benefit from 180 minutes of action rather than the potential 240 ahead of next week’s Final.
