The race is on to qualify for next season’s Champions League, but after a remarkably strong showing for Serie A sides, there could be five Italian clubs in the competition.

Inter already booked their place in the Final in Istanbul on June 10 after beating fellow Italians Milan 3-0 on aggregate, so will face either Real Madrid or Manchester City.

It means they now have two potential paths to qualify for the 2023-24 edition of the tournament, as they can either secure a top four finish in Serie A or win the Champions League and automatically enter next season too.

If they did win, then both Inter and Scudetto winners Napoli would be top seeds in the draw for the group phase.

The Europa League semi-finals will be completed tomorrow evening, with Juventus visiting Sevilla and Roma away to Bayer Leverkusen.

The winner of the Europa League will automatically qualify for the Champions League next season, and that is not something that Roma or Juve can take for granted.

Jose Mourinho’s Giallorossi are currently in sixth place in Serie A, while Juve are still waiting for the May 22 verdict in the capital gains scandal that is expected to see them docked nine points.

If either Roma or Juventus win the Europa League while not finishing in the top four of Serie A, then there will be five Italian clubs in the most prestigious competition next season.

However, the maximum number of clubs from one country in the Champions League is five.

So if Inter and either Roma or Juventus won the trophies without finishing in the top four, then only the first three in Serie A would qualify.
