The Fiorentina ultras kept their promise and have abandoned their places in the Curva Fiesole for tonight’s Serie A showdown with Juventus.

It kicks off at the Stadio Artemio Franchi at 19.45 GMT.

This is traditionally the most important game of the season for the Viola supporters, as they have a vicious rivalry with Juventus that goes back decades.

However, the Curva Fiesole group decided to boycott the match in protest at the decision to go ahead during a time when the Tuscany region is struggling with devastating floods in the wake of Storm Ciaran.

The floods left seven dead, one missing and hundreds forced to flee their homes.

Calls from the Mayor of Florence and other regional politicians to call off the match were rejected by the Osservatorio, who evaluate the way sporting events are staged.

It was insisted that the resources to put on the game would not be taking anything away from those set aside to help the relief effort.

Nonetheless, the ultras left their places empty and are instead actively working to help clear mud and standing water from homes and businesses.

A minute’s silence was held before every match this weekend in honour of those who died, but in Florence the two teams mixed together before kick-off to show their solidarity beyond club rivalry.
