Why Serie A cannot use VAR challenges next season

While Serie A President Lorenzo Casini has said a tennis-style use of VAR challenges is the way forward, ex-referee Luca Marelli warns it is impossible without the IFAB changing the protocol first.

The use of the technology and on-field reviews is causing increasing controversy after a series of incidents, including Roma, Bologna and Spezia protests over the last couple of weeks alone.

Casini suggested Serie A should give coaches a number of challenges they can request so the referee will view an incident again.

However, former referee and current DAZN pundit Marelli warns that can only be a proposal and will not be available for anyone from the 2022-23 campaign.

He explains in order for VAR to be called into action with a challenge, there would have to be a change to the protocol and that can only be done by IFAB.

The 2022-23 season protocol has already been drawn up and there are no significant changes, so at best a panel could be set up to potentially discuss the changes for the 2023-24 campaign instead.
