Lazio have picked up an extra €3.4m by beating Inter to second place in Serie A, as well as setting a strange record with Napoli for clubs from the centre and south of Italy.

The Aquile upset the odds to take the silver medal in the 2022-23 season, as this evening’s 2-0 victory away to Empoli ensured they ended the campaign on 74 points.

This is worth Champions League qualification and prestige, but also has a cash benefit for Claudio Lotito’s club.

The Scudetto winners Napoli pocket €23.4m in prize money, followed by €19.4m for Lazio in second and €16.8m for Inter in third.

Milan will get €14.2m by finishing fourth in the league.

There is another curiosity about this season, because it is the first time ever that the top two have come from the centre and south of Italy while all three relegated sides hail from the north of the country.

Sampdoria and Cremonese are already doomed, with the third spot going to either Spezia or Hellas Verona.
