Why Roma weren’t awarded a penalty for De Ligt’s handball

Roma wanted a penalty following a handball by Matthijs de Ligt but Davide Massa made the right call by not pointing to the spot.

In the 14th minute of the match at the Stadio Olimpico, when the Giallorossi were 1-0 up, a Lorenzo Pellegrini shot bounced off De Ligt, striking his foot first before ricocheting off his hand. The Roman club immediately called handball but Massa was not convinced.

The rules are clear regarding intentional handballs and it’s stated that if the ball ricochets off another body part before striking the hand, it’s not a handball. Massa immediately explained this to Pellegrini, who didn’t seem convinced.

This is likely to be a top talking point of the match and many fans are already enraged by the decision. Unfortunately for Roma, things went from bad to worse as Paulo Dybala scored an equaliser in the 18th minute, tying things up in the first half at the Stadio Olimpico.
