Roma wanted a penalty following a handball by Matthijs de Ligt but Davide Massa made the right call by not pointing to the spot.

In the 14th minute of the match at the Stadio Olimpico, when the Giallorossi were 1-0 up, a Lorenzo Pellegrini shot bounced off De Ligt, striking his foot first before ricocheting off his hand. The Roman club immediately called handball but Massa was not convinced.

The rules are clear regarding intentional handballs and it’s stated that if the ball ricochets off another body part before striking the hand, it’s not a handball. Massa immediately explained this to Pellegrini, who didn’t seem convinced.

This is likely to be a top talking point of the match and many fans are already enraged by the decision. Unfortunately for Roma, things went from bad to worse as Paulo Dybala scored an equaliser in the 18th minute, tying things up in the first half at the Stadio Olimpico.

  1. I am not a Roma or Juve fan but the refereeing these days are so bad! The rules of the games are not the same for every body and this includes UEFA competitions as well.
Why do the referees do not have the same rules? Some give and some don’t and I personally no longer understand the rules of the game! It’s like everyone doing what they like and that’s ridiculous! In Addition players have become more like vegetables, it’s okay to protect the players but hearing whistle at every contact is making the game looks like kids football… Women’s football is more physical now always then men’s

  2. First handball wasn’t a penalty but the second was?? Identical situations, both shots ricocheted off DeLigt’s leg onto his hand. Plus, he got second yellow card for something that was unintentional. Anyway, small team mentality cost Roma points, shame Juventus don’t show this kind of grinta more often this season. Fino alla fine! FJ

  3. Comment Juventus should play from now on as it did the last 20 minutes against Roma, there they were active, they pressed, with an idea of team play, that is the attitude for the future
