The men’s football tournament at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris is underway, but Italy will not be involved again, which has been the case since 2008.

Why Italy are not playing football at Paris 2024 Olympics

The men’s Olympic football tournament is made up of 16 sides, with representatives from six continents across the globe.

As hosts, France were granted automatic qualification, while the other 15 teams had to qualify on their own merit.

Unlike most other sports at the games, there was no direct qualification process for football at the Olympics. Various youth international tournaments, such as the U21 Euros and the U23 Africa Cup of Nations were used as the determining rankings instead.

Excluding hosts France, there were three more European slots up for grabs, which have been claimed by Spain, Ukraine and Israel.

Spain, Ukraine and Israel were three of the four semi-finalists at the 2023 U21 European Championships. Though England were the eventual winners of that tournament, there is no English men’s team at the Olympics, due to the technicalities surrounding ‘Team GB’.

Italy were knocked out of the Group Stages of the 2023 U21 Euros, so that is where their qualification process for the Olympics came to an end.

  1. So Israel moved to the euro zone? What do you mean by Israel taking one of the European spots?? Ridiculous!

  2. They will have fun avoiding riots and burning cars!Israel and Turkey are NOT in Europe. Why are they in European competitions?

  3. Why is Israel taking a place of another European country , she is not part of Europe or I have got my geography wrong !!
