Why Mourinho, Dybala and Pellegrini are banned for Roma

The Roma touchline will look very different when they host Salernitana today, as Jose Mourinho, Paulo Dybala and Lorenzo Pellegrini are suspended, so Bruno Conti is on the bench after 18 years.

It kicks off at the Stadio Olimpico at 17.30 UK time (16.30 GMT).

The Giallorossi open their Serie A season and are already forced to deal with problems, missing injured Tammy Abraham and Marash Kumbulla.

Dybala and Pellegrini both sit out bans, as they accumulated enough yellow cards in the previous season to activate a suspension.

They were both booked in the final game of last term, a 2-1 home win over Spezia on June 4.

Mourinho complained about the system carrying over cards to the next competition, insisting in yesterday’s press conference that the practice was “old-fashioned, démodé.”

It is hardly unique to Italy, as Milan won’t be able to count on their new signing Yunus Musah until Week 2 because he still has a ban left over from LaLiga when playing for Valencia.

Meanwhile, Mourinho and his assistant manager Salvatore Foti are both suspended for the first 10 days of the Serie A season as a result of insults aimed at referee Daniele Chiffi after their game with Monza on May 3.

That means Mou will also miss the next match away to Verona.

As Stefano Rapetti does not have the requisite coaching badges, that means Roma must put director Bruno Conti on the bench.

It will be his first experience as coach since his 15-match stint as caretaker manager from March to June 2005.

Last season, Mourinho insisted on watching games from either a room within the bowels of the Stadio Olimpico or on the team bus for away matches rather than sit in the stands when suspended.

Mourinho will also be banned for the first four games of the Europa League after he was caught on camera telling referee Anthony Taylor he was a “f***ing disgrace” in the Europa League Final.
