Alvaro Morata has often been criticised for his poor goal scoring ability at Juventus but he is still an incredibly key figure in the squad.

The 29-year-old Spanish striker joined the club on a two-year loan deal from Atletico Madrid in September 2020, with the move having a €40m buy option attached. Many fans feel that he has not lived up to expectations in Turin, struggling to consistently find the back of the net.

Despite only scoring six league goals in 27 appearances this season, Morata’s attacking contributions are vital for Juventus. His biggest weakness is clearly his ability to find the back of the net, scoring only 17 goals compared to his 20 expected goals since his arrival in 2020, but he brings a lot more to the table.

Morata is an important creative figure in the team, being the team’s most productive player in attack when looking at expected goals scored plus expected assists.

This is because he consistently manages to involve teammates in play, providing 11 assists in Serie A across his one and a half seasons in Turin, the same as equally productive forward Paulo Dybala. He’s also first for big chances created and second for key passes amongst centre forwards in Serie A, a sign of his consistent team play.

Morata may not be the man on the score-sheet every weekend, but he is a vital part of Juventus’ attack and his possible departure in the summer would be a blow for Massimiliano Allegri.
