Milan revealed their 2022-23 away kit on Friday and have explained some of the design choices made – hinting at Champions League success, long-running superstition and a throwback to an iconic shirt of almost 30 years ago.

The red-and-black stripes of the home shirt – which is available from Kitbag here – are traditional, even if occasionally they are tinkered with to allow for a bit of variation. But the stripes on the home kit are vertical, and the away shirt, more often than not, features no stripes at all.

Indeed, an all-white away kit is considered Milan’s lucky shirt – their maglia fortunata – when it comes to European finals. “In 1963, when the Club became the first Italian team to lift the European Champion Clubs’ Cup, Milan did so in an all-white strip. Six decades and seven European titles later, the all-white away kit remains an iconic part of the club’s identity,” a statement on the club’s website reveals.

But what about the addition of seven horizontal stripes for 2022-23? “This season, the tradition continues with the throwback to a fan favourite; the 1984-85 away kit,” the club’s statement continues. “The white kit with horizontal pinstripes made an instant impact that year. This kicked off a new era of dominance for the club, as they went on to win five more European titles wearing a white kit in every single final.

“The white base features seven red horizontal stripes across the middle of the jersey in a fresh new take on the 1984-85 away jersey. The seven stripes represent Milan’s seven Champions League triumphs, from Wembley Stadium in 1963 until Athens in 2007.”

Indeed, Milan often prefer to wear their all-white away kit rather than their red-and-black striped home strip in European finals – they’ve lost two out of the three finals in which they’ve worn the red-and-black, compared to winning six out of eight in all-white. That said, Milan were wearing all white in the 2005 Champions League Final in Istanbul…

Will this year’s all-white kit bring luck in Europe to Stefano Piolo’s side?
