Why Milan have not extended Maldini’s contract yet

According to the latest reports, Paolo Maldini has not yet signed a new contract with Milan because he wants guarantees of greater decision-making power within the club.

The Rossoneri are in a state of flux after the takeover from RedBird, although Elliott Management remain as minority shareholders and reports vary over quite how much power they will continue to have going forward.

Maldini and director Frederic Massara are only under contract until June 30 and the delay in signing new deals is starting to raise a few eyebrows.

The Corriere dello Sport newspaper maintains this is because Maldini wants guarantees of greater decision-making power within the club.

He has made such a good impression on new patron Gerry Cardinale, who repeatedly praised Maldini as the key figure in linking Milan’s past, present and future.

Maldini is looking to share or take over more of the duties from CEO Ivan Gazidis.

It is even suggested by the newspaper that Maldini wants to be a similar figure to Beppe Marotta at rivals Inter.
