Milan worked hard to rehome various redundant players this summer but one who stayed behind in Lombardy is Mattia Caldara, for one reason in particular.

The Rossoneri sent away a long list of unneeded options over the last two months, ranging from Charles De Ketelaere, Junior Messias and Alexis Saelemaekers to Divock Origi, Fode Ballo-Toure and Matteo Gabbia.

After losing out to Napoli last season, Milan are desperate to get their hands on the Scudetto once again and invested heavily in reinforcements like Chrisitan Pulisic, Samuel Chukwueze and Tijjani Reijnders.

As highlighted by Calciomercato.com, one player who Milan failed to rehome this summer was Caldara, who has spent time with Spezia and Venezia over the last two years.

Despite the fact that the 29-year-old didn’t feature at all for the Rossoneri during the pre-season, the decision has now been made to reintegrate the defender into Stefano Pioli’s squad, including him in the list of 25 registered players in Serie A.

The reason is because Caldara is one of the four players developed in Italy’s youth academies, needed for squad registration purposes. The other three are Marco Sportiello, Alessandro Florenzi and Antonio Mirante.

The 29-year-old could also be included in the Milan’s registered squad in the Champions League for the same reason, although his placement there would take away one of the Under-22 players on the list like Marco Pellegrino.
