Referee expert Luca Marelli explains why Angel Di Maria could be banned for more than two games after receiving a straight red card against Monza yesterday.

El Fideo saw red in the first half at the U-Power Stadium for a reaction foul after he was held.

This will definitely lead to a two-match ban that will see the Argentina international miss games against Bologna and Milan at the Stadio Meazza after the break.

However, there could be more bad news for the Old Lady as Di Maria is in danger of missing out on three games, according to DAZN referee expert Luca Marelli.

Di Maria apologises to Juventus: ‘My fault we lost’

“The definition of this foul is interesting. It’s called ‘violent conduct’ even if the ball is in play,” he said.

“The minimum ban is two games, but then we must consider another aspect. Before leaving the pitch, Di Maria told something to the referee who looked surprised and angry.

“It’s still unclear what he said, but if it was something disrespectful, then the sporting judge could give him a three-match ban rather than two.”

If Di Maria is suspended for three games, he will also miss the Derby della Mole against Torino on October 15.

The ex-PSG star joined the Bianconeri in the summer after the end of his contract in Paris, signing a one-year deal at the Allianz Stadium.

  1. He will be relieved if he misses 3 games as being part of the Turin car crash is not worth it. At 34 years young he made the wrong move. I bet he regrets not going to Barca. At least he only has less than a year to go and he can exit the smallest team he has ever had the misfortune of representing.
