IFAB rules state that a match ‘is not invalidated because of wrong decisions involving VAR’, so Juventus–Salernitana can’t be replayed despite a late Bianconeri winner wrongly disallowed.
The Bianconeri are furious with referees and VAR following a 2-2 draw against Salernitana at the Allianz Stadium.
They had recovered from two goals down but saw a late Arek Milik winner disallowed for Leonardo Bonucci’s offside. The defender seemed involved in active play but was probably kept onside by Antonio Candreva who wasn’t spotted by VAR on the bottom left corner.
According to Sky Sport Italia, the Italy winger was below any other player, so he was keeping Bonucci onside.
Juventus fans are furious on social media and some hope the match can be replayed due to VAR’s error.
However, the protocol clearly states that a mistake from the Video Assistant Referee doesn’t lead to a game being invalidated under any circumstance.
In principle, a match is not invalidated because of:
- malfunction(s) of the VAR technology (as for goal line technology (GLT))
- wrong decision(s) involving the VAR (as the VAR is a match official)
- decision(s) not to review an incident
- review(s) of a non-reviewable situation/decision.
What is VAR for? Laughable.

VAR is good for football, but VAR is human-controlled, so those at the VAR room should have seen that Candreva was there in the beginning.

OMG! There was no VAR error. There is conclusive proof that when Milik makes contact with the ball, Candreva is NOT keeping Bonucci onside.
