Jose Mourinho is in the stands for Roma’s trip to Spezia, as he received a two-match touchline ban for insults and gestures towards the referee that referenced Juventus and the Calciopoli scandal.

The incidents occurred during and after the 2-2 draw with Hellas Verona last week.

Mourinho was caught on camera repeatedly making the telephone gesture with his hand to the fourth official and towards referee Luca Pairetto.

Although he has not explained the gesture, it’s widely believed he was referencing the Calciopoli scandal of 2006, which saw Pairetto’s father Pierluigi – at the time a leading figure in the refereeing association – have regular telephone contact with Juventus director Luciano Moggi.

Pairetto’s brother Alberto also currently works at Juventus as Head of Stadium Revenue.

Regardless of the family connection, Luca Pairetto cannot officiate Juventus or Torino games because he is from Turin and still based in the city.

The aftermath of the game between Roma and Verona was also extremely fiery, as the Disciplinary Commission explained Mourinho, director Tiago Pinto and a member of the coaching staff were all suspended for insulting the referee in the tunnel.

  1. Exactly 1Mike!! Even though he can’t manage Juventus and turin games he will do all he can to make sure any teams chasing Juventus will struggle if he officiates!! This is such a huge conflict of interest, and so blatantly obvious🤦‍♂️
