England fans have been escorted to the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona for tonight’s EURO 2024 qualifier against Italy, photographed alongside their passports by police to ensure everyone is accounted for.

It kicks off at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona in Naples at 19.45 GMT.

There had been real worries about whether England fans would be allowed to travel at all, as Naples was over-run earlier this month by hundreds of Eintracht Frankfurt supporters who did not have tickets and came to the city anyway looking for trouble.

They had pitched battles with police, who then struggled to keep them separate from the local ultras eager to ‘defend the city.’

In this atmosphere, the local authorities are taking no chances and are eager to identify all England fans before the game.

They are photographed alongside their IDs because this will be used in future to identify them in video footage in case of trouble.

Italian police very rarely make arrests on the spot, they tend to study the footage and identify people later.

The England fans were also taken in special buses to the stadium in order to minimise the risk of trouble.

Despite the ban on selling alcohol in the city during the build-up to the match, clearly many still got around it, as film shows hundreds of empty beer bottles and cans left around the streets.
