While there are reports Inter are ‘stunned’ by Romelu Lukaku’s decline in physical fitness since the Chelsea spell, in Italy they assure a ‘cautious’ approach is necessary to avoid relapses.

The centre-forward had been overweight and sluggish at Manchester United, but was put on a strict diet and exercise regime by Antonio Conte, finding the form of his life in those two years under the coach.

Lukaku lost confidence and some of his shape at Chelsea, so had to go back on the diet and do extra training, but picked up a thigh injury on August 28.

That flexor issue proved to be a lot more serious than anyone expected, as he has still not made his comeback.

The Gazzetta dello Sport and Daily Mail suggest Simone Inzaghi and Inter fitness coaches are ‘stunned’ at the decline in his fitness levels and propensity to muscular injuries.

However, Sport Mediaset interviewed rehabilitation specialist Doctor Cristiano Fusi, who assures this is all part of the plan.

“There is no reason to worry, we can reassure the fans,” said Fusi.

“With a player who has such large muscles as his, it is important to avoid the risk of relapses. It takes time for him to return at the right moment, in the right condition.”
