There was controversy at the Allianz Arena, as Sadio Mané parried a Nicolò Barella strike with his hands, but it was not judged to be a an Inter penalty against Bayern Munich.

The incident occurred in the opening 10 minutes of the Champions League match in Germany this evening.

A corner was cleared as far as the edge of the area, where Barella thumped a ferocious volley.

It looked to be heading towards the goal until it was deflected by Mané, who visibly frightened by the ball coming towards him at full speed, instinctively put both hands in front of his face.

The referee was called to judge himself with a VAR on-field review, but maintained the original decision, that Mané did not make himself any bigger by putting his hands in front of his face, making the handball irrelevant.

It is a controversial decision, but one that technically could be allowed with the current rules of the game.

If the hands had not been there, the ball would’ve hit his face and been deflected anyway.

6 thought on “Why Inter did not get a penalty against Bayern Munich”
  1. No big drama. Bayern are the superior team and Inter have been getting the rub of the green on many occasions. More importantly is their game this Sunday. The 7/9 part time bush leaguers with their wise man of calcio better known as Mission Impossible Max are on course for a full horse whipping.

  2. I dont care what people think or say. I am a die hard pro italiano fútbol so I will always go for any italian team against any contender. I agree with the ref on no penalty in favor of inter. Any protection that aoids the face or nuts should not be a penalty. This is more a reflect that a bad intention.

  3. So because Mane didn’t want to get concussed by Barella’s shot, a handball is OK?

Isn’t the obvious option to simply move your head out of the way, if you want to avoid a concussion?
