Inter’s Nicolo Barella has not been selected by Luciano Spalletti for his latest Italy national team squad, as the Nerazzurri midfielder is due to undergo a pre-arranged operation at the beginning of next week.

Why Barella won’t play for Italy in September

According to updates from La Gazzetta dello Sport, Barella will undergo surgery on his nose on Monday in order to clear up his airways and make his breathing more comfortable.

The procedure is scheduled to take place on Monday and will take a few days of rest to recover from, which means that he will not be available for Nations League matches against France on September 6, or against Israel on September 9.

He is still with the squad for Friday evening’s Serie A clash against Atalanta, and is expected to be available for the away trip to Monza after the international break, on September 15.

Barella is one of eight players from Spalletti’s EURO 2024 squad who has not been selected this time around, alongside Federico Chiesa, Jorginho, Bryan Cristante, Gianluca Scamacca, Gianluca Mancini, Matteo Darmian and Michael Folorunsho.
