Paolo Maldini’s contract expires today, but his extension has been pushed back several times because the club legend wants more decision-making power.

Maldini and Massara’s contracts run out at midnight and despite multiple reports in Italy claiming that their signature was imminent, the club has yet to reach an agreement with both of them.

They are seen as the main architects of Milan‘s first Scudetto in 11 years and Rossoneri fans are hoping to see the legendary defender extend his stay at the club.

But why has it taken so long for him to sign a new deal?

Maldini and Massara contracts go down to the wire for Milan

The former Italy international wants decision-making power and expected to have a bigger transfer budget for the summer. Instead, the Rossoneri will only have €50-60m available for new signings and have missed out on Sven Botman, who had been in talks with Maldini and Massara for several months, reaching a principle of agreement with the Serie A champions.

Elliott reportedly decided against matching Newcastle’s offer, so the Dutchman moved to the Premier League.

The same could happen with Renato Sanches, who had given his green light to join Milan before PSG’s offer. The Rossoneri decided not to raise their €18m bid, so the Portugal international is destined to move to Paris.

There are also different views concerning the club’s development for the summer. Maldini wanted to sign Botman, while Elliott, who are still in charge until September, would rather invest in attacking players.

Maldini and Massara had a meeting at the club’s headquarters on Wednesday but didn’t sign a new contract. The latest report of Il Corriere della Sera claims that Maldini has refused to put pen to paper on a new deal, sending the contract back to Elliott representatives with some corrections he wants in order to commit his future to the club. His contract extension doesn’t depend on money but is about his power and role at the club.

8 thought on “Why hasn’t Maldini signed a contract extension with Milan yet?”
  1. the outcome of this huge mess is that it has completely disrupted plans to strengthen the milan squad for the coming season and possibly do well in the champions league … … all this now seems in ruins ……

  2. If 18 millions are true for Renato Sanches, this is peanuts considering today’s price tags for players of his calibre. However, he is no Kessie and is quite different player. Injury prone as well. Won’t be a disappointment if they miss out on him but whoever they would want to sign instead of him will cost at least 30 to 40 millions.

  3. Nobody knows what is going on inside Milan. The silence from both Maldini and the management has made it impossible to understand anything. These whole media stories are mere suggestions and not a fraction of the reality.

If Maldini can let players go on free because he refused to bow down to their excessive requests and what he deems inappropriate and not in interest of Milan, he would never bow down to Elliott if he feels their conditions are not in interest of Milan.

Maldini should stick to his gun as he does usually, he fully represents our interest and not just his pocket. He will get the best deal out of these Americans. Let’s just be patient.

  4. He probably realised they actually completed the signing of Origi!
What he thought was a joke turned out to be a reality.
Maldini, probably still shocked Milan actually won the league now have to defend the scudetto and get past the group stages of UCL with Origi leading the front line. Hahahahaha what a joke we have become!

  5. All true Milan fans are with Maldini. He has worked miracles and deserves our full support. He cares about Milan and as he said in his interview a few weeks back, he knows Milan fans see him as a guarantee, so if he can’t have the conditions to to do his job and respect the trust put into him by fans, he will walk away.

Then there will be riots in Milan. Elliott and Cardinale better think long and hard before letting him walk away. They will lose the trust of the fans and attendance for next season will definitely drop if Maldini leaves and that’s a hit the club can’t afford to take.

  6. Everyone needs to calm down. Milan just won the Scudetto and nobody expected it. If it does not work out at least they can wait another decade or longer for number 20. After all, savouring the wait and reaching that target will feel extra special. On a downside, the other Milanese side and Juventus will dominate for years if they do not get their act together and soon.
