Juventus and Paulo Dybala verbally agreed to a new contract back in October but pen was never put to paper and now his renewal is in doubt. How has it got to this point?

The 28-year-old Argentinian forward’s current deal expires with the Bianconeri at the end of this season, meaning that he’s currently able to sign a pre-contract with a new club. Considering that he’s one of the main stars in the Juventus squad, they took a significant risk by failing to tie him down to a new deal before the end of the January transfer window.

Back in October, Dybala reportedly agreed to renew his contract for four years with Juventus, earning €8m net per season plus €2m in add-ons. At the time, Dybala was confident that an agreement would be fully formalised soon and he expressed this to the media.

“We hope to close soon for the renewal. This is everyone’s desire to complete the negotiations. They know that on my part, there is a great desire to stay in Turin. I know that the management also wants to extend my contract and we have started talking again.

“We hope that everything will be over soon and good news can arrive for everyone. I am very confident.”

Juventus began to get cold feet however, with their main concern reportedly being the player’s fitness and injury record. Dybala has missed a number of games so far this season due to injury and last campaign he was sidelined for four months due to a medial collateral ligament issue.

These concerns led the Bianconeri to consider changing their offer to the former Palermo man, wanting to reduce the length of the deal by a year and changing the wage structure by lowering the fixed amount and raising the incentive-based add-ons.

Unsurprisingly Dybala was not impressed and now Inter are looking to complicate things, with CEO Beppe Marotta making initial contacts regarding a possible move in the summer.

The Argentinian forward’s agent Jorge Antun will meet with Juventus’ management later this week to take stock of the situation, but for now there’s a serious possibility of Dybala leaving Turin after seven years at the end of this season, closing an important chapter in his career.

14 thought on “Why hasn’t Juventus renewed Dybala’s contract?”
  1. Can’t believe it’s been seven years. On balance it’s safe to say he didn’t live up to his potential. I think we all expected more.

He had that amazing performance scoring two fine goals against Barca in the champs and I thought that was the moment he was stepping up to become a champion,
    but it just never happened.

One other standout was the winning goal against Tottenham but the big moments were few and far between.

  2. Dybala costs to much for his performance. At Juventus. Juventus could try to renew his contract but sell him next transfer window or lose him at zero cost. Either ways, Juve should be looking for others playmakers and attacking midfielders.

  3. Do you not watch him in any league games @Serie A Fan ??? By far the most influential attacking player. Even more needed now with Allegri’s boring set up. Maybe you only see them play on midweek nights…

  4. He’s a talented player that can turn a match, but with his age/salary/injuries, he may be just too much of a risk.

  5. @Lynchy Don’t get me wrong he’s a very good player but he never stepped up to that truly elite level. He never entered the best in the world conversation (i.e top 5). He has few memorable performances in big games (especially champs). And of course, he’s always getting injured.

Come to think of it, Chiesa has probably already had more big moments in his career (across Italy and Juve) than Dybala has.

  6. He’s gotta go… money will be better spent elsewhere. Some players just can’t stay healthy. It’s a pity, but also a fact.

  7. For the sake of keeping some identity to the team, Dybala should definitely stay. He will probably never be what we hoped, in part due to injuries. But on his day he is by far the best player in the league. His technique and shooting abilities are basically unrivalled. And he does seem to really like the club, which just makes the Inter rumours plain painful to behold. Extend and cross eveything that’s possible for him to stay fit.

  8. Why haven’t Juve given him a contract? Because he is ALWAYS INJURED! Not his fault, but it is really bad luck and a club as big as Juve cannot allow bad luck. Send him away, even Inter. His injuries are 99.99% likely to continue.
Use the salary to bring in much needed MF players or a new striker who is FIT. Sorry Paolo, but the injury record is just too bad, and it is not as if this guy won the UCL for Juventus even when he was fit. That one game against Barcelona and a nice goal against Tottenham are the only knockout games where he really stepped up

  9. It’s better for them to part ways, dybala never step up because his injury setback, and that money should be better spent on another player, maybe dybala can step up in another team, and Juventus got a better fit plater for their system, just like milan and donnaruma

  10. He’s been a very good player for us, but it’s time to move on. He’s too injury prone and doesn’t fit the system. What I mean by that, is that in all his time at the club, we’ve never really known his strongest position.

I’d like Juve to buy Christopher Nkunku from RB Leipzig, for me he’s the type of player we’re crying out for. In a trident with Chiesa and Vlahovic this would be special.

  11. Difficult to say with authority which option is the best for Juventus. I think they are right offering less money since he is a never fulfilled promised player. Most of the time injured. At the top of his game, he is a monster, but how many times a year is that?

  12. I also think only reason why he can get contract is only because juve can earn something from selling him, but I doubt that someone would pay big millions, need to think very carefully for juve, not make mistake please, its enough
