Chelsea fans called for Jose Mourinho to return as the pressure rises on Mauricio Pochettino, but the fans in West London should take note of the Special One’s time at Roma.

The 61-year-old Portuguese coach was sacked by the Giallorossi back in January after a painful defeat to Milan, a result that left his side ninth in the Serie A table.

Whilst things went well in his first two years at the helm, in typical Mourinho style the wheels began to come off in the third campaign.

It would be remiss to suggest that the Special One failed to impress in the Italian capital; he guided Roma to the Conference League title in his first campaign and took them as far as he could in the Europa League in his second term, losing to Sevilla on penalties in the final.

His presence at the club also helped convince stars like Paulo Dybala and Romelu Lukaku to make the jump to Roma, something that his replacement Daniele De Rossi is benefitting from after taking over six weeks ago.

Back in England, Pochettino seems destined to leave Chelsea at some point in the coming months, with the team looking frankly dire considering their financial resources, failing to show much of note in the Premier League this season.

During the draw with Brentford on the weekend, some Blues fans began chanting Mourinho’s name, calling on him to return to West London, wanting him to take charge for a third time, but this doesn’t seem like a particularly good idea.

Whilst Mourinho clearly showed in Italy that he isn’t too ‘outdated’ just yet, he’s clearly not a Jurgen Klopp or Pep Guardiola figure who’ll build a strong long-term project, something that would heavily benefit the Blues considering their changes in both management and squad.

The 61-year-old is still plagued by his usual downfalls as well; incredibly hot-or-cold relationships with players, defensive and often negative tactics, endless controversies with officials and the media and general frustrations with transfer market policy.

Further damning for Mourinho is the explosive start of his replacement De Rossi at Roma; the former midfielder has secured six wins out of seven in the league since taking over, only losing to likely Scudetto winners Inter, and has taken the team from ninth to fifth in just six weeks.

With Chelsea clearly in a state of flux, adding a fairly volatile chemical like Mourinho may only exacerbate things in West London, rather than giving them a fresh start and new direction in a Premier League increasingly dominated by Manchester City.

  1. Chelsea requires mou as of yesterday! The team at present has no identity, it’s not worthy to be called Chelsea, the team solidty that mou build and others benefited from is lacking! It’s a free fall. Mou needs to come in and establish our Chelsea. We don’t need a long term nonsense! We need results! If mou had replaced tuchel, we would have a different Chelsea! Mou doesn’t entertain nonsense and milks the players for all what they have, ask Roma!

  2. Observer 1 …no.It would be a disaster with this failed narcissist , the above article is 100% correct.
