Paris Saint-Germain are in no mood to celebrate after beating Juventus 2-1, because they were pipped to the top of the Champions League group by Benfica after four different criteria were equal.

The French giants already knew they were in the Round of 16 regardless of tonight’s results, as did the Portuguese side, but it was all about gaining top seed status in the draw.

PSG went in ahead on goal difference, because their head-to-head record was completely identical.

A 2-1 win away to Juventus seemed to be enough, but Benfica turned on the style with their 6-1 thrashing of Maccabi Haifa in Israel.

That final result, with the last-gasp Joao Mario goal, means PSG and Benfica are totally level on points, head-to-head record, goals scored and goals conceded.

It was about to go down to yellow cards, until Joao Mario put Benfica ahead on away goals scored.

This is another blow in the competition for PSG, including Italy internationals Gianluigi Donnarumma and Marco Verratti.

Meanwhile, Juventus got third place thanks to a better goal difference than Maccabi Haifa.
